Be Consistent

f you have read the book, and you are, in fact, convinced you are an alcoholic/addict, then it is VERY important (potentially life-saving) that you make an effort to be consistent in your recovery attempts.

Your disease is like a potent poisin doing one-armed push-ups, building up strength, and wating to attack you through every step of your recovery process. Inconsistency is one of that monster's favorite ways to sneak inside and sabatoge your best recovery efforts.

So how can you remain consistent in your recovery?

-Go to the same meetings as often as possible

-Be in touch with familiar people and don't compartmentalize your thoughts and feelings

-Don't spend too much time alone with yourself, especially in the first year of recovery, as your brain is most likely the only "person" who has ever REALLY tried to kill you.

-Find and keep a comfortable routine with work, exercise, meetings, play-time, etc.

The key here is that you want to remain strong, to build your new muscle memory up enough to protect you from the "cunning, baffling, powerful" and patient disease of addiction.

  1. Thanks for your post.
Constinency is so vital to helping stay sober. One we direct ourselves away from what we need to do on a 'regular' basis is when we run into trouble.

  2. It is a horrible disease. I need to be reminded of just what it can do to those that I love and the fall out for me.
